‎In a conversation with reporters prior to the tournament, Adelani remarked, “The coach consistently emphasizes, ‘If you are not a warrior, you cannot play football. If you behave like a girl or a boy on the field, you will be taken advantage of. You must embody the spirit of a lion.’

‎Nigeria is placed in Group D of the tournament, competing against Senegal, Sudan, and Congo.
