MTN Group has made big progress in improving its internal cloud abilities by certifying over 1250 employees through the Microsoft Enterprise Skills Initiative (ESI).
In the last year, MTN has certified more employees than any other Microsoft client in Africa. This shows how committed MTN is to developing its workforce as a key part of its digital transformation plan.
This milestone is part of MTN’s overall cloud strategy, which started in 2022 with Project Nephos. This project began with setting up the Cloud Centre of Excellence (CCoE) and a five-year partnership with Microsoft.
The goal is to build cloud technology knowledge across the whole company and bring real business advantages to operations and customer services.
The Microsoft ESI program was carried out using a detailed and complete training plan. It covered important areas like Azure Fundamentals, Apps and Infrastructure, Data and AI, Security, DevSecOps, and Data Management.
This wide-ranging training has given MTN employees in different markets and platform businesses the skills they need to use cloud technologies effectively, which helps drive innovation and improve how things are done.
Nikos Angelopoulos, MTN Group Chief Information Officer, said, “The amount and speed of certification across the Group have been impressive, led by MTN South Africa and MTN Nigeria, with strong involvement from other operating companies like Fintech, Bayobab – our digital infrastructure venture, and Chenosis – our API marketplace.
The Microsoft ESI program has provided a clear learning path that helps employees gain deep technical knowledge and use these skills in their jobs. ”

Besides technical skills, the ESI programme has helped create a culture of ongoing learning and professional growth at MTN.
It supports the Group’s aim to develop talent that is ready for the future and to build digital skills that match MTN’s long-term goals.
