Rivers Govt Reaffirms Commitment to NYSC Ideals at Employers’ Workshop

The Secretary to the Government of Rivers State and Chairman of the NYSC State Governing Board, Prof. Ibibia Lucky Worika, has reiterated the state government’s unwavering commitment to the principles and goals of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Scheme.

Speaking at the 2025 NYSC/Corps Employers’ Workshop held on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Worika emphasized that the state’s Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas Ekwe, remained resolute in supporting and sustaining the NYSC’s vision.

The event was themed “Strengthening NYSC/Corps Employers Partnership for Improved Service Delivery.”

Worika assured NYSC officials and corps members serving in the State that the government will continue working towards aligning the scheme’s operations with global best practices.

He condemned the actions of certain employers who, in collusion with Corps Members, evade the service requirements, describing such behavior as unacceptable.

The SSG warned that the government would take decisive action against any individuals or organizations found culpable.

Representing the NYSC Director General, Brigadier General OO Nafiu, Mr. Chijioke Duru, Deputy Director of Operations at the South-South Area Office II, described the workshop as a strategic platform for engagement.

He noted that it serves as a vital tool for employers to understand NYSC policies, harmonize ideas, and foster effective communication.

Nafiu, through his representative, urged employers to view their participation in the workshop as a civic responsibility. He called on them to collaborate with NYSC leadership to enhance and strengthen the Scheme’s operations.

He reminded employers that most corps members are non-indigenes and, as such, deserve a warm and hospitable reception from their host communities to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

The workshop, attended by security officials and key stakeholders, culminated in the recognition of employers who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to corps members’ welfare.

Honorees included HRM King Apostle Chinyere Chibuzor Gift, General Overseer of Omega Power Ministry; Brig. Gen. S. Ahmed, Garrison Commander of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division; Dr. Richard Okoye, MD/CEO of SaveALife Hospital; and Dr. (Barr.) Samuel Kalagbor, Administrator of Port Harcourt City LGA, among others.
