Flood Alert: NEMA Boss Says No Cause For Alarm Over Orashi River

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reassured residents of Rivers State and surrounding areas that there is no imminent threat of flooding from the Orashi River, amid growing public concern over reports of possible water release from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.

Eric Ebhodaghe, NEMA’s Head of Operations, confirmed during an interview with Nigeria Info correspondent, stated that the agency has not received any official notification or evidence suggesting that the dam has been opened.

He emphasized that NEMA remains vigilant and continues to monitor the situation closely, particularly in communities located near the Orashi River.

“The agency is monitoring the Orashi River and assessing communities that are close to the river. There is no life-threatening flood at the moment in communities in Rivers State,” Ebhodaghe stated.

Backing up this position, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, also weighed in on the matter.

According to him, a direct conversation with the Lagdo Dam Manager, Ahmad Bivoung, revealed that the water level currently stands at a low 2.06 metres, with no discharge reported.

Utsev assured that the Nigerian government maintains open communication lines with Cameroonian officials and is prepared to alert the public immediately if any changes occur.

The agency’s continued surveillance and coordination with regional partners aim to ensure early warning and effective response to any potential flood threats.
