Tear Gas Deployed Against Fubara Supporters in Port Harcourt, Pro-Wike Protesters Unaffected

Port Harcourt, Rivers State – Tensions escalated in Port Harcourt today as police reportedly deployed tear gas against supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, while a parallel demonstration by pro-Nyesom Wike supporters proceeded without intervention. The incident has ignited accusations of police bias and fueled concerns regarding freedom of assembly in the state.

Supporters of Governor Fubara, clad in black and many of whom were mothers, took to the streets carrying placards bearing messages such as “Bring Back Our Governor” and “Save Our Democracy.” They were reportedly met with tear gas by police officers, dispersing the crowd and causing widespread distress.

Simultaneously, a separate demonstration by supporters of former Governor Nyesom Wike, dressed in white, also took place in the city. Notably, this group was reportedly allowed to proceed without any police intervention, despite also holding placards.

The stark contrast in police response has sparked outrage among Fubara’s supporters and observers, who are alleging a clear demonstration of bias. The use of tear gas against a group largely composed of women, peacefully expressing their political views, has been condemned by human rights advocates and political analysts.

“This is a blatant violation of the fundamental right to peaceful assembly,” stated a local human rights activist, who requested anonymity due to safety concerns. “The selective application of force raises serious questions about the impartiality of the police in Rivers State.”

The incident comes amidst ongoing political tensions in the state, stemming from a reported rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The political climate remains highly charged, with both sides mobilizing their supporters.

The police have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. However, the reported use of tear gas against the Fubara supporters, while leaving the pro-Wike group unhindered, has intensified the already volatile political atmosphere in Rivers State. The incident has also triggered calls for an independent investigation into the police’s actions and for guarantees of the right to peaceful protest for all citizens.

The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected as the political drama unfolds in Port Harcourt.
