CAF: Bayelsa govt splashes cash gifts on female football team

The Bayelsa State Government have rewarded the Bayelsa Queens players with N28 million following their performance at the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League.

The players and their officials visited Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri in his office on Thursday.

Addressing the team at the 93rd State Executive Council Meeting, Diri said, “You left Bayelsa and the shores of this country firstly to compete in the West-African Region and became champions of the region by representing our dear country of Nigeria, and represented the region in the CAF Women competition.

“For the first time, you are the first club that has taken Nigeria to the semifinals of the CAF Women’s Competition. Because of you, the name of the state in female football is larger being imprinted in the heart of Nigerians and Africans.

“You have made your country proud, and Nigeria will stand tall when in Africa female football is talked about. We are not satisfied with the bronze, but we must start from somewhere, so on behalf of your state, the Prosperity Government, we say thank you.”

The 21 first-team players will receive N1m each, while the 14 reserve players will get N500,000 each.

Coach Domo Okara got N1.1 million, his assistants N500,000 each, support staff N300,000 each, and all the board members got N1.5 million.

The governor also promised that the medical expenses of injured players will be written off.

Bayelsa Queens were also rewarded with $200,000 by CAF.
