Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has promised to give each member of the Rivers United team $40,000.00 if they reach the group stages of the competition.

The Commissioner of Sports Rivers State Christopher Green said this during a refresher course for players, coaches, and officials of Rivers United FC in Port Harcourt ahead of the CAF Champions League.

Christopher Green during the programme asked players and officials of Rivers United to put in their best to win the ultimate prize in the competition.

”Of course, you do realize that His Excellency has said that you will get Forty thousand dollars if you get to the group stage and tell me what happens when you get to the quarter-finals or the final, you understand me. And from us the management, of course, you know once we get to the group stage, you know what happens”.

”And so, this is the opportunity you have now to put in your very best. Be very disciplined to ensure we achieve that thing that has eluded Nigeria for a very long time. You can bring it back and you can also work towards making the African Super League, because as you continue to win you begin to chalk up points” he said.

The Commissioner of Sports Rivers State Christopher Green further said that the essence of the training is to equip the players and the officials on the latest rules of the competition.

He said the CAF Champions League is beyond having the players but also understanding the rudiments of the game.

Christopher Green also asked the players and officials to assimilate the rules of the competition so as to give their best when the competition gets underway in September.

”It is not enough to play, playing without the knowledge of the rules will be useless to us and you have the opportunity now with an expert that is here, who is going to take you through the rudiments of the new rules, the amended rules so that we get acquainted. It’s not only the players even with the coaches and everybody because we want to compete in this Champions League, not by joining and making the numbers, but we want to make an impact” he said.
