Four students of the University of Port Harcourt who were kidnapped by gunmen on Saturday have regained their freedom.

TPCN gathered that the students were attacked and whisked away by gunmen while returning from the Ahoada area of Rivers State on Saturday, where they went to collect samples for their research project.

It was learnt that the victims escaped on Wednesday when a team of security operatives raided the kidnappers’ hideout.

Confirming the development, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Sam Kpenu, said the students had been reunited with their families.

According to him, “Four students of the University of Port Harcourt who were kidnapped last weekend have been released and reunited with their families.

“Gbaa Nenubari, Asumbo Elizabeth, Eze Chimezie and Onosigho Augustine were abducted on their way from the Orashi River where they had gone for a vegetation sampling for their final year project and postgraduate research work.”

He noted that the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill, while receiving the students in his office, commended the Nigeria Police Force, the university’s Chief Security Officer, and the entire security agencies in Rivers and Bayelsa states for their prompt intervention in securing the release of the students.
