Yuletide: Traveler apathy hits Bonny LGA as pirate attack continues

Brave Dickson

Traveller apathy has hit the Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State, following the unabated pirate attacks.

The Yuletide season used to have more travellers moving from the city to their hometown for Christmas holiday but fear of pirate attacks have started discouraging the people of Bonny from traveling.

A former chairman in charge of Bonny boat transport union, Golden Hart told our correspondent that their major sea challenge is pirate attacks.

He maintained that pirate attacks had been unabated because no gunboat is stationed along the Port Harcourt/Bonny sea route.

You recall that the Wike-led state government had procured 76 patrol vehicles equipped with communication gadgets; eight armoured fitted gunboats to tighten coastal security and protect the waterways from the activities of criminals.

“Our travelling challenge is pirate attacks, not boat mishap.

“There are three creeks on the Bonny sea route where kidnappers and pirates take their victims to, if there were gunboats patrolling those creeks, attacks on boat passengers would have reduced.

“Government should bring gunboats to Bonny water route in order to boost travellers’ enthusiasm again, “Hart said.
