Five escape death in Cross River

A driver conveying four passengers has crashed into a deep gully along Yellow Duke, in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The incident which took place at about 8:30pm on Wednesday was witnessed by passersby and residents of the area, who expressed disappointment at the state of the road and shock at the magnitude of the lone crash.

“Until we lose lives from this place, the authorities will not fix it. Each time they will come with plans to fix this place, but the work is not always solid. It’s just unfortunate that we have to suffer this,” one Mrs Eno, a resident, said.

According to another witness, Ogar, a taxi driver, “I am very surprised that this is happening in the city of Calabar, it is a shock. What kind of life is this? Please help us tell the government to locate this place and do something about it because our lives are at risk, or should we now stop using this road?”

Narrating the event to Nigerian Tribune, an eye witness, Mr Aniekan Ben, blamed the accident on the bad road in the area, saying that the driver didn’t discover the bad spot on time and was caught by the broken state of the road.

“Bad road that’s all, the road is bad. As a stranger, he is not familiar with the area. He just wanted to pass but was too close to the ditch. The stuff just cut in and went with the car,” he said.

Aniekan explained that the driver had four passengers on board and that there was no casualty recorded.

“There were people in the car. There were four occupants (passengers). The driver’s phone is blank at the moment”, he further explained.

He added that the passengers, who were shocked by the crash, left the scene.

As at press time, a towing van had been contracted to help to lift the vehicle out of the ditch.
