Hoodlums burn police officer to death in Akwa Ibom

There was tension in Akwa Ibom yesterday as a police officer identified as Inspector Aniekan was maimed by hoodlums in his apartment at Ikot Afangha community, Essien Udim Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the perpetrators traced the officer to his house and set it ablaze at about 2:30 am while he was asleep.

The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Odiko MacDon, who confirmed the incident stated that they are aware of the unfortunate incident and are yet to establish the cause of the action.

He said the command has delved into investigations to ascertain the cause of action.

He added that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Amiengheme Andrew, has expressed great displeasure in the recent attacks on police personnels in the state.

He stressed that the Commissioner is deeply saddened by the loss and has reached out to the family of the bereaved.

He added that: “There is an ongoing operation right now in the area and hopefully the culprits will be apprehended and I can assure you that justice will prevail at the end of the investigation.”

Recently, there has been unrest in the area as hoodlums have reportedly attacked police vehicles and military personnels operating in the area.
