Drivers threaten mass protest against FG over hike in fuel price

By Brave Dickson

Drives within the commercial sector in Rivers State have mapped out plans to massively protest against the recent increase in fuel price by the federal government which now sells for N150 per litre.

The commercial drivers also told our correspondent that they had given the FG, a grace period of 21 days to revert to the old price with effect from Friday, August 7.

The Chairman, Urban Drivers Welfare Association, Rivers State, Mr Lekia Isaac described the action of the government as unfair to the people of the country especially commercial drivers.

“We will not fold our hands and watch the federal government arbitrarily increase the price of petrol at the detriment of the taxpayers especially commercial drivers.

“The ultimatum we have given the federal government to revert to the old pump price will expire after 21 days.

“If the federal government does not reverse the pump price, we will mobilize our members to massively demonstrate on the streets of Rivers State and picket the office of the Department of Petroleum Resources in Port Harcourt.

“After we have protested, if the FG refuses to revert the pump price, we will ensure that we significantly increase transport fare.”

The commercial drivers also lamented how the COVID-19 restrictions badly affected their business, adding that they see no reason why the FG would keep increasing fuel price.
