Democracy Day: Ken Saro-Wiwa’s murder engendered democracy  in Nigeria – MOSOP

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has condemned Nigeria’s failure to exonerate Ken Saro-Wiwa and eithgt others whose murder, it said, engendered Nigeria’s democratization in 1999.

MOSOP president, Fegalo Nsuke said “Nigeria’s suspension from the CommonWealth coupled with global pressures on Nigeria following the 1995 Ogoni murders engendered the democratic rule in Nigeria today”

Nsuke said, “MOSOP demands the exoneration of the nine innocent Ogoni activists including Ken Saro-Wiwa murdered by the Nigerian Government on November 10, 1995 as a fundamentally necessary to resolve the Ogoni problem”

He regretted that among the burning issues affecting Nigeria under the military era and prior to May 29, 1999, the Ogoni issues remain the only unresolved issue which Nigeria has pretentiously tried to downplay.

Nsuke maintained that as far as the Ogoni people were concerned, the innocence of Ken Saro-Wiwa and the other eight who were murdered with him will continue to shape the future of the Ogoni struggle until the issues are properly addressed. He said the Ogoni people will not give up on Saro-Wiwa’s exoneration and other demands of the Ogoni people.

The MOSOP President noted that secret moves to force oil production in Ogoni against the wishes of the Ogoni people were plots to kill the Ogoni people knowing that the people will certainly resist those moves.

Votes Will Count in 2023

In a related development, the MOSOP president, Fegalo Nsuke has declared that rigging and other electoral crimes will not be tolerated by the Ogoni people during the 2023 elections.

Nsuke made the declaration in a separate speech commemorating Nigeria’s annual Democracy Day. He said politicians and political parties should begin to think of what positive impacts they have made on the people to deserve a seat in government.

The MOSOP president said 2023 will be different and the people will decide who governs them.

“Let it be known that in 2023, we, the Ogoni people will not allow any form of rigging and we will be out to decide the outcome of elections through the ballot” he said.
