Court sentenced rapist to 14-year imprisonment

A Port Harcourt High Court has sentenced one Mr. Ejike Owhor to 14-year imprisonment for raping a single mother at Mgbuosimi village, Rumuji in Emuoha LGA of Rivers State.

The convicted person committed the crime on September first 2011 when the single mother was on her way to buy medications for her sick child in the evening.

The Presiding Judge, Justice Iheanyichukwu Wodi while delivering his judgment said the offender was convicted after considering all evidence before the court.

Justice Wodi also said that Ejike Owhor was sentenced for 14-years because he is a first offender.

Speaking to newsmen outside the court, the Prosecuting Counsel Cordelia Eke Esq, commended the court for giving justice to the rape victim after six years of pains and misery.

The Counsel paid tribute to the late Dr. Florence Onuah who testified as a Prosecution witness in the case before her kidnap and demise.

She also commended the victim for Speaking up and decrying the embarrassment associated with such cases in order to prove her case stating that

this should serve as a lesson to Rapists out there.

Cordelia Eke also advised other victims of rape to speak out so as to eradicate such crime in the society.

The Counsel to the convicted person, Ovodowhuo Eke said his final appeal at the court enabled his client to get a reduced sentence of 14-years instead of life imprisonment.

He said that he will consult his clients to know their next line of action.
