Akuku-Toru Chairman Tasks Leaders on Gender Equality

The Chairman of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area in Rivers State, Hon. Aboiyaa Bob-Fubara, has charged governments, traditional rulers, civil society groups, community leaders, and development partners to shift from mere talk to decisive actions that advance women’s rights, welfare, and empowerment.

In a statement to mark this year’s International Women’s Day observed on March 8, Hon. Bob-Fubara described the annual event as a vital moment to acknowledge women’s immense contributions to society while intensifying the push for genuine gender equality and inclusivity.

The council boss stressed that women remain key drivers of community development, economic progress, family stability, and national growth. He insisted that their roles deserve full recognition through targeted policies and programmes that guarantee equal opportunities and active participation.

Hon. Bob-Fubara specifically called for strong support for initiatives empowering women and girls in critical areas such as education, economic involvement, leadership training, and the safeguarding of their rights.

He singled out former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for praise over his pioneering policy of appointing women as Vice Chairmen in local government councils statewide.

According to the chairman, this approach underscores Wike’s firm conviction in women’s leadership abilities and has helped propel many Rivers women into influential positions nationwide.

The Akuku-Toru helmsman emphasised that the essence of this year’s International Women’s Day must transcend symbolic gestures and translate into deliberate efforts to dismantle barriers hindering women’s full participation and advancement in society.

Reaffirming his administration’s dedication, Hon. Bob-Fubara pledged to sustain an enabling environment for women to flourish and play meaningful roles in grassroots development.

He urged women in Akuku-Toru and across Rivers State to keep exhibiting resilience, leadership, and active engagement in community matters, assuring them of the council’s unwavering backing for empowerment and welfare programmes.

The chairman specially congratulated women in his local government, including his mother, Ayiba Bestman; the Vice Chairman of the Council, Mrs. Warigbani George; Mrs. Tokini Bob-Fubara; and others for their dedication, resilience, and sacrifices.

He described them as vital partners in driving sustainable development and building a truly inclusive society.
