Kwara United Lands In Hot Soup

Kwara United F.C. have condemned the violence that followed their rescheduled Gameweek 22 fixture against Rivers United F.C. on February 18, 2026, in Ilorin.

The match ended 1–1, but incidents broke out after the final whistle as some home supporters stormed the pitch area. The fans reportedly blocked Rivers United players, officials and match officials from leaving the stadium for over 40 minutes. During the disturbance, Rivers United General Manager, Chief Okey Kpalukwu, was attacked.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Kwara United expressed deep regret over the incident. The club condemned the actions of the supporters involved and offered apologies to Chief Kpalukwu, the Rivers United delegation, match officials, security personnel and spectators affected. The club also stated that it would ensure accountability and take measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Following the incident, the Nigeria Premier Football League imposed sanctions on Kwara United. The penalties include a ₦9 million fine, a deduction of three points and three goals, and a banishment to the MKO Abiola Sports Arena for their remaining home matches. The club has also been directed to identify the supporters involved for arrest and prosecution and provide evidence of compliance to the league body.

Kwara United have 48 hours to appeal the decision.
