NDLEA Officer Killed in Bonny Island Drug Raid, Six Arrested

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has confirmed that one of its officers was killed during a raid on a notorious drug enclave in Bonny Island, Rivers State, as operatives arrested six suspected drug traffickers and recovered a large cache of illicit substances.

In a statement on Tuesday, the agency said its operatives stormed the Ama Hausa area of Bonny Island on Friday, 6 February 2026, following intelligence on drug trafficking activities in the community. During the operation, officers recovered quantities of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, skunk and tramadol.

The raid, turned violent when suspected drug dealers reportedly mobilised armed hoodlums to resist arrest. In the ensuing attack, an NDLEA officer, Chief Narcotic Agent Sadiq Bako Mujahid, sustained severe head injuries.

According to the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, Mujahid was immediately rushed to the Bonny Island General Hospital for emergency treatment but later died from his injuries.

Despite the attack, NDLEA operatives were able to arrest all six suspects linked to the operation. Those arrested include the alleged gang leader, Genesis George Benson, whom the agency said was responsible for orchestrating the attack on the officers. Others arrested are ThankGod Okon, Shamsudden Isah, Muhammed Musa, Adamu Muhammed and Muhammed Yusuf.

Reacting to the incident, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the operatives for their courage and resilience under fire.

He described Mujahid as a disciplined and brave officer who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty, adding that the agency has extended condolences to his family, colleagues and the NDLEA Rivers State Command.

Marwa warned that attacks on NDLEA personnel would not deter the agency’s operations, stressing that those responsible would face the full weight of the law as the agency continues its fight against illicit drugs across the country.
