To prevent death and protect children from the effect of the preventable diseases, Rivers State has commenced its Measles–Rubella vaccination campaign with a formal flag-off held at the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area (LGA) Headquarters in Rumudomaya, marking a renewed commitment.
The ceremony, which took place on February 4, 2026, was led by the Executive Chairman of Obio/Akpor LGA, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, who played host to government officials, traditional rulers, health professionals and development partners. The vaccination exercise is scheduled to run from February 4 to 15, 2026, with a focus on reaching eligible children across communities.
In his address, Dr. Worlu described child health as a foundation for sustainable development, noting that vaccines remain one of the most effective tools for preventing life-threatening diseases.

He expressed appreciation to the Rivers State Government and the Ministry of Health for prioritising the wellbeing of children and called on parents, caregivers and community leaders to support the campaign to ensure full coverage.
The Executive Secretary of the State Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Chituru Adele, commended the Obio/Akpor Local Government for its strong collaboration and ownership of the programme.
He explained that the campaign is community-driven, designed to penetrate hard-to-reach areas and protect every eligible child. Dr. Adele emphasised that leaving even one child unvaccinated poses a risk to others, urging residents to actively promote the exercise within their neighbourhoods.
Representing the Commissioner for Health, the Permanent Secretary, Prof. Justina Jumbo, praised the leadership of the local government and encouraged communities to fully embrace the immunisation exercise.
She officially declared the campaign open, after which the State Immunisation Officer conducted a practical vaccination demonstration.
The event attracted a wide range of stakeholders, including the Vice Chairman of Obio/Akpor LGA, Hon. Mrs. Nyeche Joyce; the Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon. Rex Abuchi; traditional rulers from the area; senior local government officials; and directors from the health sector.
The Vice Chairman acknowledged the collective efforts of all partners and participants towards the successful rollout of the campaign.
