Owerri based Nigerian Premier Football League club, Kun Khalifat FC have reportedly announced their immediate withdrawal from the Nigeria League (NPFL) following sanctions imposed on the club for failing to honour their Matchday 24 fixture against El-Kanemi Warriors.
The club made the announcement in an official statement on Wednesday, expressing “shock, disappointment and outrage” over the NPFL’s decision to forfeit them three points and three goals, in addition to imposing a N10 million fine.
According to the explanation given by the management, it is claimed that the affected fixture, scheduled for Monday, February 2, 2026, could not be honoured due to logistical challenges, including the breakdown of the team’s vehicles. The club stated clearly that the NPFL Board had been duly informed of the situation in a letter dated February 1, 2026.
The recent memo, signed by Michael Amaefula, the club’s Chief Executive Officer, accused the NPFL of ignoring their communication and unilaterally rescheduling the match before imposing what it described as “harsh and disproportionate” sanctions.

The club’s released statement further described the sanctions as a “travesty of justice,” alleging a lack of willingness by league organisers to engage clubs in a fair and transparent manner.
Part of the club’s tatement stated as follows— “The decision to forfeit 3 points and 3 goals, coupled with a fine of 10 million naira, is not only disproportionate but a clear indication of the NPFL’s bias against our club. Of course the club believe that the sanctions are a travesty of justice and demonstrate a lack of willingness to engage with clubs in a fair and transparent manner.
”As a result of these unfair sanctions, we, Kun Khalifat FC, hereby announce our immediate withdrawal from the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL). We can no longer continue to be part of a league that disregards the challenges faced by its member clubs and prioritises punishment over fairness and justice.”
While urging other teams to demand reforms and greater accountability from the league’s management, the club also called on the NPFL to review its policies and procedures to ensure fair treatment of member clubs, .
Despite the fact that Kun Khalifat has withdrawn from the league, they said it would continue to explore other avenues to showcase its talents and contribute positively to Nigerian football.
