The Rivers State Government has launched a thorough investigation into the Rivers State College of Nursing Sciences over allegations of a “cash-for-grades” syndicate, marking a significant step in its crackdown on academic corruption.
The probe has already led to the suspension of a Head of Department implicated in the scandal, which involves the illicit sale of exam papers, bribery for certifications, and extortion of students for project approvals.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, revealed on Monday while briefing journalists in Port Harcourt that multiple petitions and complaints from students prompted the investigation, highlighting the administration’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the state’s healthcare training system.
“We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for corruption,” Dr. Oreh emphasized, “and will ensure that those responsible face the consequences of their actions.
“To ensure the investigation’s transparency and impartiality, the government has established a panel led by Professor Chizindu Alikor, Chief Medical Director of the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.

The panel will conduct a forensic audit of the Year Two examinations and review the college’s financial and academic processes.The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and security agencies are collaborating on the investigation, and students are encouraged to come forward with credible evidence, assured of protection and anonymity.
Dr. Oreh warned that academic fraud and extortion will not be tolerated in professional medical training, and those found guilty will face the full weight of the law. An acting Head of Department has been appointed to oversee the affected department pending the investigation’s outcome.
