Fake Condoms in Nigeria Risk Pregnancy, Others, NAFDAC Warns

Nigerians have been warned against using counterfeit Kiss condoms circulating in major markets across the country, with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) highlighting serious health risks, including unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and allergic reactions.

In a public alert issued on Monday (Public Alert No. 042/2025), NAFDAC said the warning follows reports from the Marketing Authorisation Holder, DKT International Nigeria, a leading NGO in contraceptive social marketing.

The fake condoms have reportedly been found in Onitsha Market, Idumota Market, Trade Fair Market, and in markets across Kano, Abuja, Uyo, Gombe, Enugu, and other cities.

NAFDAC explained that while genuine Kiss condoms are designed to prevent both unwanted pregnancies and STIs such as HIV, gonorrhoea, and syphilis, the counterfeit versions offer little to no protection due to poor quality and lack of sterilisation.

The agency said the use of fake condoms poses serious health risks, leading to breakage, infection, allergic reactions, and a false sense of security.

To help consumers identify genuine products, NAFDAC outlined key differences: authentic Kiss condom boxes have light-coloured packaging, clear instructions, storage and caution details, and a visible condom image, while counterfeit boxes are darker, feature incorrect or incomplete addresses, and lack important information.

Differences also extend to the condoms themselves, with genuine ones being larger, oval-shaped, more lubricated, and having a larger teat end, compared with the thinner, rounder, less lubricated fake versions.

The agency has directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to intensify surveillance and remove falsified Kiss condoms from markets nationwide.

NAFDAC also urged healthcare professionals and consumers to report any suspected cases of substandard or falsified condoms to the nearest agency office.

While highlighting the risk surrounding the used of circulated fake condom, the agency urged citizens to only used genuine, quality-assured condoms from approved manufacturers.
