Complete Abandoned Akenfa Bridge Project – Bayelsa Govt Urges NDDC

On Thursday, during an enlarged meeting with representatives of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Bayelsa State Government asked the commission to complete the long abandoned Bridge Project in Akenfa Community, a suburb of the state capital city, Yenagoa.

Doubara Atasi, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Deputy Governor Douye Diri confirmed this in a statement.

Represented by his Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Diri made the call in the presence of community leaders of Akenfa Community and relevant government officials at his office in Government House, Yenagoa.

He added that the statement government decided to take action on the neglected projects, including the Polaku-Sabagreia Bridge but said that Akenfa was reverted back to the interventionist federal agency.

The reversion was after a mutual discussion between the two parties. Diri described the Akenfa link-Bridge project as strategic and critical to pedestrians and vehicular movements in the oil-producing community.

He further told the NDDC that his government communicated the re-handover of the project to NDDC in a letter dated 10th March, 2025.

The governor urged the NDDC to expedite the process of completing the project while empathizing with the Akenfa community over the delay in the execution of the project. He said the project will put an end to commuting challenges facing the people.

However, in his response, the state’s NDDC representative Deinyabofa Dimaro said the entire project will be reviewed.

He said they have been captured in the 2026 budget for seamless execution. Dimaro promised to relate the issue to the Managing Director of the NDDC, Samuel Ogbuku.

Members of the committee include Dimaro; the Commissioner for Special Duties (Central), Mandy Akpallo; and Chief Dikivie Ikiogha, Technical Adviser to the Governor on NDDC Matters, Kuro Nyenye; Isiya Albert; Secretary to the Akenfa Community, Wilson Mumeya, the Youth President, Moses Izibekiebo, as well as an engineer to be nominated by the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
