Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has indicated that the Nigerian senior men’s team is set to participate in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco with a singular objective: to win the Cup.
Nigeria concluded the previous edition as runners-up to the hosts, Côte d’Ivoire, from whom the Super Eagles lost the trophy in the final held before enthusiastic home supporters at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara in Abidjan last January.
In an exclusive interview with the Confederation of African Football website (CAFOnline) yesterday, the centre back for Saudi Arabia’s Al Kholood FC emphasized that the Super Eagles aim to surpass their last achievement in Abidjan, as the experience of falling short in the final has strengthened the team.
”The last AFCON left a significant impact on all of us,” Troost-Ekong began. “This group (of Eagles) is eager to seize another opportunity to attempt to win the trophy. We gained invaluable lessons from that final—this time we will remain composed and perform our football more effectively,” he remarked.
However, he refrained from labeling the Super Eagles as the clear favorites to secure the trophy in Morocco. Troost-Ekong pointed to the hosts Morocco, the defending champions Côte d’Ivoire, and Senegal as equally formidable contenders.

”There is no such thing as a clear favorite at AFCON,” he cautioned. “You cannot win a tournament based on expectations. AFCON is challenging and filled with surprises,” he noted with gravity.
Troost-Ekong, who has participated in several AFCON campaigns with Nigeria, asserted that the key to victory lies in “heart, unity, and consistency.”
Troost-Ekong also expressed gratitude to Nigerian fans for their unwavering support and assured them that the team would exert every effort to bring home the title for the fourth time.
”When all of Nigeria stands united, that is our strength,” he proclaimed. “Hopefully, the headline this time will read: Nigeria crowns the special generation with an AFCON title.”
