Shettima Departs for UN General Assembly

Vice President Kashim Shettima has left Abuja to attend the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York, USA. Shettima announced his departure in a statement posted on his social media pages on Sunday.

The event, which runs from Monday, September 22, to Sunday, September 28, 2025, will see Shettima representing President Bola Tinubu.

During his visit, the 59-year-old is scheduled to deliver Nigeria’s national statement and participate in the UN High-Level General Debates, as well as other key side events.

A major part of his agenda is to announce Nigeria’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement at a special UN event focused on climate change.

Earlier, The Port City News reported that a statement released on Saturday by Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications to the Shettima, Stanley Nkwocha, said his principal was attending the UNGA 80 on a directive from Tinubu.

The 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 80) opened on 9 September 2025, with the high-level General Debate scheduled to run from 23–27 September and conclude on 29 September 2025.

The SDG Moment will be held on 22 September to highlight inspiring action on the Sustainable Development Goals. Shettima, during his trip, will attend the commemoration of the UN’s 80th anniversary and participate in the high-level general debates.

The former governor of Borno State will deliver Nigeria’s national statement on Wednesday, September 24, between 3:00 PM and 9:00 PM New York time.

Additionally, Shettima will attend a special climate event for heads of state and government, hosted by the UN Secretary-General. At this meeting, he is expected to announce his new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

Shettima’s agenda also includes a high-level roundtable on adequate and affordable housing, hosted by the President of Kenya, as well as other bilateral meetings and events.

After the UNGA session, Shettima will travel to Frankfurt, Germany, for a meeting with officials from Deutsche Bank before returning to Nigeria.
