‎”We’ve Already Beaten Nigeria”-Ex-Eagles Coach

German coach Gernot Rohr feels that Nigeria’s prospects of securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup are nearly extinguished after Tuesday’s 1-1 draw against South Africa in Bloemfontein, while his Benin Cheetahs triumphed over Lesotho with a score of 4-0.

‎Following the conclusion of Matchdays 7 and 8 this month, Bafana sits at the top of Group C with 17 points, closely followed by Benin with 14 points, and Nigeria trailing in third place with only 11 points.

‎”We are thrilled about this significant victory (over Lesotho) and are eagerly anticipating FIFA’s ruling to deduct three points from South Africa and award them to Lesotho, as per the regulations,” the former Super Eagles manager remarked to analysts on Wednesday, September 10, while lamenting Nigeria’s draw against South Africa.

‎”Naturally, I had predicted a win for Nigeria, but they ended up with a draw, which leaves them with a slim chance of qualifying, although there is still hope for second-placed teams across the various groups,” he elaborated. “However, it could be challenging for Nigeria as they will require additional points.

‎”It can be disheartening, and I feel sympathy for my former players who may miss out on the next World Cup.”

‎Regarding the upcoming international break in October, Rohr acknowledged that there would be a sense of déjà vu when he leads the Cheetahs against the Super Eagles in their final Group C match in Uyo on October 13.

‎”It would be a wonderful feeling to return to Uyo for our last qualifier against Nigeria,” said Rohr, whose team previously defeated the Super Eagles 2-1 on Matchday 6 in Abidjan. “But we will head to Uyo with the aspiration of qualifying for the World Cup as well.

‎”Honestly, it’s always an emotional experience to return (to Uyo) and reconnect with the same people with whom we shared great moments at the magnificent stadium in Uyo, which remains one of the finest stadiums in Africa,” he concluded.
