Super Eagles WC Hopes Fade After 1-1 Draw with South Africa

Nigeria Super Eagles’ path to the 2026 World Cup has become significantly more difficult after a 1-1 draw against South Africa in a critical qualifying match in Bloemfontein.

A crucial away win was needed to bolster the Super Eagles’ chances, but they were unable to secure all three points, leaving their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

The match began with South Africa seizing the initiative, leveraging their home advantage to put immense pressure on the Nigerian squad.

Despite this early push, Nigeria created their first real opportunity in the 10th minute when a well-placed cross from Ademola Lookman resulted in a corner.

South Africa’s goalkeeper, Foster, was alert to the danger and was able to clear the ball with a header.

However, a major setback occurred for the Super Eagles in the 25th minute. An unlucky own goal by captain William Troost-Ekong put South Africa’s Bafana Bafana ahead, causing a shift in momentum.

The Nigerian team did not give up, and just before halftime, they found their equaliser.

A powerful, albeit controversial, header from Calvin Bassey found the back of the net, levelling the score at 1-1 and silencing the home crowd.

Seeking a boost to their attack, Nigeria made two substitutions at the start of the second half, bringing on Arokodare for Dessers and Onyemaechi for Troost-Ekong.

Arokodare immediately showed his potential, making a strong run down the left wing and firing a shot that narrowly missed the goal.

As the second half progressed, Nigeria began to assert control over the game, though South Africa’s defence remained solid.

The Super Eagles launched a late, desperate assault in search of a winning goal, but despite their relentless effort, they could not break the deadlock.

This result leaves Nigeria in a precarious position. They are now 6 points behind group leaders South Africa, who have 17 points in Group C.

Nigeria sits on 11 points, the same as the Benin Republic, which also has a game in hand. With only two matches remaining, the missed opportunity to earn three points has significantly jeopardised their World Cup aspirations.
