NARD Meets Amid Strike Threat Over Unmet Demands

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) is set to convene its National Executive Council meeting today, Wednesday, to decide on the next steps following a recent ultimatum issued to the Federal Government.

Earlier, the association gave government agencies a 10-day deadline, threatening a nationwide strike if their demands were not met.

This development adds strain to Nigeria’s already fragile public health system, which faces a shortage of medical personnel, inadequate infrastructure, and overcrowded hospitals.

Resident doctors, who form the bulk of staff in teaching and specialist hospitals, have frequently resorted to strikes over issues such as unpaid salaries, poor working conditions, and welfare concerns.

Health experts warn that another strike could severely disrupt healthcare services, pushing patients toward costly private options and worsening health outcomes across the country.

In a statement dated September 1, 2025, signed by NARD leaders, including President Dr. Tope Osundara, the doctors called for immediate payment of the outstanding 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, arrears from the 2025 salary review, unpaid 2024 allowances, timely specialist allowance payments, and the reinstatement of recognition for West African postgraduate certificates.

They also urged the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria to issue certificates to qualified candidates, implement the 2024 CONMESS agreement, resolve welfare issues in Kaduna State, and address challenges faced by resident doctors at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso.
