The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has officially unveiled a 15-member squad for the upcoming World Athletics Championships, scheduled to take place from September 13 to 21, 2025, at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo.
The contingent includes eight male and seven female athletes, set to compete in 11 track and field events. These range across sprints, hurdles, jumps, and throws: men’s and women’s 100m, women’s 100m hurdles, men’s 200m and 400m, men’s 400m hurdles, men’s and women’s long jump, men’s shot put, women’s discus throw, and women’s hammer throw.
Leading the women’s lineup is Oluwatobi Amusan, the current world record holder in the 100m hurdles. She will be joined by Olympic long jump bronze medalist Ese Brume and fast-rising discus thrower Chioma Onyekwere Lyons.
Also making the team are Nathaniel Ezekiel, who has gained international recognition in the men’s 400m hurdles, and experienced shot put athlete Chukwuebuka Enekwechi.

Other athletes named in the Tokyo-bound team include Rosemary Chukwuma (100m), Prestina Ochonogor (Long Jump), Obiageri Amaechi (Discus), Oyesade Olatoye (Hammer), Kayinsola Ajayi and Israel Okon (100m), Udodi Onwuzurike (200m), Samuel Ogazi and Chidi Okezie (400m), and Charles Godfred (Long Jump).
AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, emphasised that the selection process was strictly based on athletes meeting the qualification standards set by World Athletics. He expressed optimism that the team would deliver strong performances and bring pride to the nation.
Chief Okowa extended his appreciation to coaches, sponsors, and government bodies for their continued support and contributions to the development of Nigerian athletics. He also reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to investing in talent and promoting growth in the sport.
