Celebrating African Heritage: Empowering the Future on International Day for People of African Descent

The International Day for People of African Descent is observed every year on August 31 to celebrate the rich heritage, culture, and contributions of people of African descent across the globe.

It serves as a reminder of their significant role in shaping societies, advancing knowledge, and enriching cultural diversity worldwide.

The purpose of the day is to acknowledge their contributions while also highlighting , systemic racism, and inequalities that many people of African descent continue to face.

According to  Mrs  Ifeoma  Obiechina, a lecturer in African Studies,  the  day is a call to remember  the struggles and celebrate the strength of African identity.

However, despite progress, challenges  such as racial injustice, cultural  misrepresentation  and economic  exclusion  persist  within African communities  worldwide. Mr Godwin  Christopher,  a human rights advocate, emphasized  the need for systemic  change.

On the need to harness collective heritage  to drive development and  justice  Dr. Godwin Bassey a Political sociologist , Uniport, speaks further.

With 2025 designated as the International  Year for People of African  Descent,  this year’s  theme “Recognition  Justice and Development ” is a call for all to work towards a world where every African descended  person is empowered to reach their full potential.
