The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has rejected accusations from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that it is a political tool of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) page on Tuesday, the EFCC addressed the ADC’s allegations that it is selectively prosecuting opposition figures while ignoring alleged corruption cases involving APC members.
The ADC had claimed that the recent questioning of former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal and the investigation into former Imo Governor Emeka Ihedioha were part of a “media trial” aimed at discrediting opposition leaders.
EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede defended the agency’s actions, asserting that the commission operates under a “non-partisan mandate.”
He argued that if he is not criticized for investigating high-ranking members of the ruling party, he should not be condemned for investigating opposition figures.
Olukoyede said the ADC’s statement was a rude surprise and unfair blame. He added that anyone looking at the situation honestly would see that the EFCC does its job without favour.
Responding to the ADC’s claim that the investigations are politically motivated and not based on new evidence, Olukoyede stated that “every corruption allegation deserves to be investigated and there is no constraint of time and season in criminal investigations.”
He highlighted that both past and present political figures from various parties are facing charges for alleged economic and financial crimes.

Olukoyede also pointed out that the EFCC is currently investigating some key figures within the ruling APC, as well as several serving state governors from different political affiliations.
He maintained that the commission would not be blackmailed into disclosing details of its discreet investigations.
He agreed with the ADC’s assertion that the commission belongs to the Nigerian people, not the ruling party.
Olukoyede urged the ADC and other political groups to focus on their activities and allow the EFCC to carry out its mandate without interference.
“The immunity against any investigation by the EFCC is accountability and probity,” Olukoyede said, adding that “fraud is fraud. Corruption is corruption. There is no sacred cow, protected interest or partisan consideration.”
He advised Nigerians to ignore political statements designed to “heat up the polity and divert attention from the pillage of the national treasury.”
