The APAC Introduces AI for Society Initiative

‎Organizations globally are already leveraging AI to instigate significant change and enhance the quality of life for individuals. In the Asia-Pacific region where we encounter challenges such as health disparities and severe weather conditions the capacity of AI to address these issues is immense.

‎This is the reason we are unveiling the APAC AI for Society initiative today, a $10 million commitment from Google aimed at assisting social impact organizations in the Asia Pacific in developing innovative AI solutions for their communities. This initiative will concentrate on three essential sectors: agriculture, health, and energy.

‎We are also explaining today why we are prioritizing these three sectors and how AI can contribute — and in the upcoming months, we will provide further information regarding the initial round of grant recipients.

‎Agriculture plays a crucial role in the Asia Pacific, employing approximately 30% of the overall population. However, it is also a sector undergoing significant changes, particularly as climate change is expected to diminish crop yields by as much as 50% in certain regions by 2050.

‎This is where AI can make a difference. AI can aid farmers in comprehending their landscapes and monitoring their crops to enhance productivity and make informed decisions regarding planting, irrigation, and fertilization.

‎It could facilitate the early identification of pests and diseases, preventing issues from escalating. Ultimately, AI has the potential to foster a more resilient and productive agricultural sector for both the region and the globe.

‎The Asia-Pacific region confronts considerable health challenges. We observe a high incidence of chronic illnesses, numerous underserved communities, and a lack of healthcare professionals, which frequently restricts access to quality medical care.

‎AI can assist in the early identification of health concerns, resulting in faster diagnoses and improved patient outcomes. Additionally, AI can enhance the efficiency of healthcare operations, optimizing processes, supporting healthcare providers, and ensuring that individuals receive the necessary care more promptly.
