Health Minister Meets with Nurses, Midwives Amid Ongoing Strike

The Minister of Health, Prof. Ali Pate, held a closed-door meeting with the leadership of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) and representatives from the Ministry of Labour.

The meeting is part of ongoing negotiations between the nursing and midwifery association and the ministries of health and labour.

The meeting comes as nurses and midwives continue their warning strike, which began on July 29. The strike, affecting public health institutions nationwide, is expected to persist until next Tuesday. The union is demanding improved welfare, fair allowances, and better working conditions for nurses and midwives in federal health facilities.

The nurses and midwives issued a 15-day ultimatum on July 14, which expired without a meaningful response from the government, leading to the strike.

The meeting between the minister and the union leadership aims to find a resolution to the ongoing dispute and address the nurses’ demands.
