The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed an ongoing investigation into a tragic fire incident that occurred at No. 11B Okoro Street, Choba, Port Harcourt, which resulted in the death of a 32-year-old man, Saint Sunny Amadi.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the incident, which has been widely circulated on social media, allegedly involved a 300-level female undergraduate of the University of Port Harcourt, identified as Cynthia Chukwundah, who is reported to have set her boyfriend ablaze during a domestic altercation.
The police said the incident occurred in a room where both individuals were present. The victim sustained severe burns and was rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), where he later died while receiving treatment.
Police detectives from Choba Division were immediately dispatched to the scene upon receiving the report at about 11:12 a.m. They also visited the victim at the hospital before he succumbed to his injuries.

The statement noted that Cynthia, who also sustained injuries during the fire, is currently receiving medical treatment at another facility. She is said to be heavily pregnant with the deceased’s child and is presently unable to give a full account of the incident due to her critical condition.
“The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. A thorough investigation has been launched to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragic event,” the statement read.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has called for calm and assured the public that justice will be served.
“We urge members of the public to remain peaceful and allow the police to conduct a proper investigation into the matter,” the CP said.
The CP assures that further updates will be communicated as the investigation progresses.
