Super Eagles defender Bassey named Fulham’s Player of the Year

Premier League club Fulham has named Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey as its Player of the Season for the 2024–25 campaign.

The 25-year-old, who joined Fulham from Ajax in the summer of 2023, topped the fan poll with 39.6 per cent of the votes, ahead of fellow Nigerian Alex Iwobi, who received 21.5 per cent.
Left-back Antonee Robinson came third with 19.9 per cent, while goalkeeper Bernd Leno (10.9 per cent) and Saša Lukić (8.1 per cent) rounded out the top five.

He made 35 appearances, playing a key role in helping the club achieve a record 54-point haul, which secured an 11th-place finish at the end of the season.

Despite his outstanding performances, Bassey’s efforts weren’t enough to earn Fulham a European spot—the club’s primary target for the season.

The defender expressed his gratitude to the fans and everyone who voted for him, saying he was honoured to be named Fulham’s Player of the Season.

He said, “I want to thank God – without God, I wouldn’t be where I am. Big up all my team, guys who are not necessarily at the Club, who have been helping me. Obviously, thanks to the coaching staff and the Manager for trusting me and believing in me. Hopefully, we can do amazing things next season, so thank you for your support, guys.”

Bassey featured prominently last season, amassing a total of 3,074 minutes on the pitch. He was named in the starting XI for 34 of his 35 appearances across 38 fixtures, coming on as a substitute just once.

His total minutes played ranked him fifth among all Premier League players in terms of appearances. Bassey scored two goals in all competitions—one in the Premier League during their 2–1 victory over Nottingham Forest on 15 February, and the other at Old Trafford, where he netted the opener in their famous Emirates FA Cup win against Manchester United.
