NARD Launches Nationwide Cardiac Life Support Program

The National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD has flagged off ‘the Nationwide advanced and Basic Cardiac Life Support program’.‎‎

Speaking during the flag of ceremony at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, RSUTH, in Port Harcourt, the President of NARD, Dr. Asundara Zenith, who lamented the increase rate of sudden death in the society, called upon stakeholders, including government at all levels to expand the Advance and Basic cardiac Life support training to save lives.‎‎”There are incidences where people will come down with respiratory distress, the actual intervention in that life-threatening situation, most of us don’t know how to go about it. For this reason, we deem it fit to begin to go round the country, training people on how to intervene when there are life-threatening situations.‎‎”

These life-saving skills is not limited to health workers alone, it is actually important for members of the public.”‎‎‎On his part, the Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Professor Chizindu, while explaining the importance of the training, assured that the hospital would train more health workers to build confidence, competence, ability to recognize cardiac emergencies, and response time.

“Overtime there have been stories of apparently healthy man or woman who suddenly collapsed, if there are people who are trained, some of those persons may have survived. We will invest to see that our staff are trained in this regard, and we will also carry this training beyond the walls of this hospital.”

‎‎‎Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Health, Dr. Igwem Mekele, noted that the training will cover cardiac arrest management, chest compression technique, and rescue breathing.
