WAFCON 2024: Super Falcons to Face Tunisia in Opening Match

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that Nigeria’s Super Falcons, the most successful team in African women’s football, will face Tunisia in the opening match of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The tournament is set to take place in Morocco from 5 to 26 July 2025. According to a statement on CAF’s website, the clash between Nigeria and Tunisia will be held on 6 July at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, kicking off at 17:00 local time (16:00 GMT).

Host nation Morocco will commence the tournament a day earlier, on Saturday 5 July, when they take on Zambia at the newly constructed Olympic Stadium in Rabat at 21:00 local time (20:00 GMT). Defending champions South Africa will begin their title defence on matchday three, 7 July, against Ghana at the Honneur Stadium in Oujda.

Meanwhile, Mali will square off with Tanzania later that evening in Berkane. Nigeria’s Super Falcons will face Botswana on matchday two, 10 July, also at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium. They will end their group stage campaign against Algeria on 13 July at the same venue. Justine Madugu’s side will remain in Casablanca for all their matches, with ambitions of topping the group and progressing to the knockout stage.

The quarter-final matches are scheduled for 18 and 19 July, followed by the semi-finals on 22 July. The third-place play-off will be held on 25 July, while the final is set for 26 July at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat. The Super Falcons, nine-time WAFCON champions, most recently in 2018—remain Africa’s most accomplished women’s national team. They are the only African side to have reached the quarter-finals of both the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Olympic Games.

The Madugu’s squad has qualified for every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup since its inception and will aim to secure a record-extending 10th WAFCON title in Morocco.
