Manchester United’s Europa League loss has inadvertently broken Tottenham Hotspur’s 17-year trophy drought, a period marked by consistent struggles and a lack of silverware despite years of effort.
After winning the English League Cup in 2008, it took the North London club until 2025 to finally lift another trophy. This latest triumph is a significant milestone, marking not only Spurs’ first major silverware since 2008 but also their first continental trophy since the 1983–84 season.
Tottenham’s success came against fellow Premier League underperformers Manchester United in a high-stakes Europa League final. Both clubs have had abysmal domestic campaigns, currently sitting 16th and 17th in the Premier League standings. With no notable improvements in the league, their European form stood in stark contrast.
The match was also a battle for a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League. A Manchester United victory would have secured them qualification despite their poor domestic form. Football pundits like Emmanuel Petit and specialists such as Arsène Wenger had argued that allowing a team struggling so severely in the league to qualify for the Champions League would be unfair to others who earned it on merit.

However, justice was served when Brennan Johnson scored the decisive goal in the 42nd minute, securing a 1–0 victory for Tottenham Hotspur.
Attention now turns to United manager Rúben Amorim, whose future at the club is uncertain. Failing to qualify for any European competition is a major blow, a feat not seen since the 2014–15 season, when United, under David Moyes, finished seventh following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. Before that, United hadn’t missed European qualification (excluding the Heysel ban era) since the 1981–82 season.
It would be a difficult season for Manchester United without Champions League football as there might be certain restrictions for the team in terms of signing of players to strengthen areas where they have failed to make any impact this season and it would ultimately lead to more woes for the club going forward as they might be slapped with certain bans if they fail to make any profit.
