The Need to Check Indecent Dressing in the country

Indecent dressing refers to the wearing of clothing that is excessively revealing or inappropriate for a particular setting. While fashion is a legitimate form of expression, the issue of indecent dressing has become a subject of growing concern, particularly among youths in the Niger Delta Region.

The parameters needed to classify indecent dressing has sparked debate across societies, especially in cultures that value modesty and traditional norms. The clamour for freedom to be seen, heard and understood artistically has led to a heightened gap in what is acceptable to the eyes of an African and what modern fashion permits. The consequences of indecent dressing go beyond mere discomfort or disapproval.

In some cases, it can lead to misinterpretation of a person’s intent, unwanted attention, or even victim-blaming in unfortunate situations and compromise of one’s safety. While no one should be judged or harassed based on what he or she wears, it is important to consider the context in which such clothing materials are adorned.

What may be acceptable at a beach party may not be suitable in a place of worship and it is imperative for youths in the Niger Delta region to find a common ground in dressing well and dressing decently. Further observations have shown that indecent dressing habits among young people are encouraged by parents who from tender ages allow their children dress inappropriately.

While some intentionally encourage their young ones to dress provokingly.  This is a clarion call to everyone to be mindful of their style of dressing and be good examples to each other. Therefore, dressing appropriately should not be a matter of being legal or a personal choice, but it should be a responsibility exercised with wisdom that respects societal norms, understanding context, and valuing peoples’ self-worth which are key to finding balance between fashion and decency.
