The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is issuing a strong warning to residents of Port Harcourt regarding a fraudulent scheme involving the purchase of bank account details.
While a recent arrest occurred in Benin, the EFCC has observed similar tactics and urges Port Harcourt residents to be vigilant. Fraudsters are targeting individuals, particularly young people, and offering them sums of money, typically between N25,000 and N50,000, in exchange for opening multiple bank accounts and providing their account details, including ATM cards.
These fraudulently acquired bank account details are then used to defraud unsuspecting members of the public. In a recent case in Benin, a suspect, Olawole Sunday, used account details obtained in this manner to defraud a petitioner of N2 million under the pretense of forex trading. The individual who sold their account details claimed to be unaware of the fraudulent activities.

The EFCC wishes to emphasize that selling your bank account details is illegal and can make you an accomplice to fraud. You are responsible for any transactions carried out through your bank account, even if you are not the one conducting them.
Do not open bank accounts for others or provide your account details to anyone you do not know and trust. Be wary of individuals offering quick money in exchange for your personal or financial information.
The EFCC is committed to clamping down on financial crimes and urges residents of Port Harcourt to report any suspicious activities or offers related to the buying and selling of bank accounts to the nearest EFCC office.
Protect yourself and your community from fraud. Be vigilant and do not become a facilitator of criminal activities.
