President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a lighthearted yet pointed warning to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, cautioning him against using his infrastructural achievements to shift political support in Abuja toward the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Tinubu made this remark while hosting an Eid-El-Fitr delegation from the FCT, led by Wike, at the Presidential Banquet Hall in Abuja. He recalled a conversation where Wike sought permission to work outside the Treasury Single Account to enhance development efforts.
“I asked him, ‘I know where you are coming from—your own party or my party. If this thing goes too much in your favor, you will lose your job,'” Tinubu quipped.
Wike’s Influence in the FCT
Despite serving in an All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration, Wike remains a prominent PDP figure. Under his leadership, the FCT has witnessed significant improvements in infrastructure, healthcare, and education. He has been instrumental in reviving abandoned projects and upgrading essential facilities, leading to better living conditions for residents.
President Tinubu praised Wike’s efforts, emphasizing that overseeing Abuja’s development is a privilege. He acknowledged Wike’s innovative approach to governance, which has streamlined bureaucratic processes and introduced progressive policies. Tinubu further highlighted Wike’s work as proof that Nigerians from diverse backgrounds can serve in any region effectively.
Political Implications in Rivers State
The President’s remarks have sparked discussions on their potential impact on Rivers State politics. If Wike’s influence in Abuja strengthens the PDP’s hold, it could lead to a shift in political power, possibly threatening his position in the APC-led federal government.
Notably, many have speculated that the federal government’s rumored consideration of an emergency rule in Rivers State was a move to favor Wike, a claim that has stirred tension among Rivers people, particularly those of Ijaw ethnicity. Should Wike lose federal backing, it would be seen as a victory for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his supporters, as federal influence often plays a decisive role in state politics.
Rising Tensions and Alleged Rituals
The political rivalry in Rivers has taken a dramatic turn. Recently, images surfaced showing Wike’s face placed on a coffin, allegedly as part of a ritual ceremony carried out by certain Ijaw youths. The act, widely condemned, has further fueled existing political hostilities.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, Wike’s role in the federal government and his influence in Rivers State remain critical points of discussion. Whether his infrastructural achievements in the FCT will boost his standing or lead to his political downfall is yet to be seen.
