Ex-Lawmaker Urges FG to Implement Ogoni Demands on Oil Production Resumption

The Federal Government has been urged to implement the demands of the Ogoni people following their meetings with the Dialogue Committee on the resumption of oil production in the area.

A former member of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr. Friday Nkeeh, made the appeal in an interview with newsmen, stating that the Ogonis are open to oil production resumption but warned against policies that could hinder the implementation of their demands.

Mr. Nkeeh expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of the clean-up of oil-polluted sites and the lack of potable water in many Ogoni communities. He called for adequate funding of HYPREP to enable it to fulfill its mandate effectively.

While commending the Dialogue Committee for engaging Ogonis at different levels, he urged the Committee to meet with leaders of various kingdoms to ensure that their demands are well captured in the final report.

The former lawmaker also emphasized that Ogoni participation in the oil industry and the development of the area were key concerns raised during consultations.
