Nigerian Navy Dismantles Illegal Refinery Sites in Rivers State

The Nigerian Navy, under its ongoing Operation DELTA SANITY, has made significant strides in curbing the menace of illegal oil refining in the Niger Delta region. The Navy announced the discovery and deactivation of several illegal refinery sites around Kubufari Community in Degema Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State.

In a post shared on its verified Facebook page on Friday, the Navy detailed two key operations carried out by its personnel aboard the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) PATHFINDER. On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, the ship’s crew uncovered and deactivated multiple illegal refining sites scattered around Kubufari. These sites were believed to be part of the widespread illegal refining network that has plagued the region for years, contributing to severe environmental degradation and loss of revenue from stolen crude oil.

The Navy’s operation did not stop there. On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, NNS PATHFINDER struck again, discovering and deactivating a more complex illegal refinery setup. The site contained eight large cooking pots, storage tanks, 15 dug-out pits, and a reservoir that was filled with a substantial quantity of illegally siphoned crude oil. The refinery was reportedly operational, with its infrastructure set up to process stolen crude for illicit oil products.

It bears mentioning that the Navy’s decisive action has been hailed as an essential step toward curbing illegal refining activities, which have posed a major threat to both Nigeria’s economy and the environment. The illegal refining activities in the Niger Delta region are notorious for causing severe pollution, deforestation, and contamination of local water sources. Moreover, they significantly undermine the country’s efforts to address oil theft, which continues to drain Nigeria’s oil revenues.

The Navy’s efforts in tackling the illicit trade of crude oil come at a critical time when the Nigerian government has vowed to intensify its crackdown on illegal refining and oil theft, which have become major concerns for national security and economic stability.

It is worth noting that as the Nigerian Navy continues its operations under DELTA SANITY, those close to the matter hope that these proactive measures will not only disrupt the operations of illegal refineries but also serve as a deterrent to others involved in such activities. The government has consistently stood by its commitment to securing Nigeria’s oil assets and protecting the environment from the harmful effects of illegal refining.
