Nigerian Troops Crack Down on Oil Theft, Arrest 19 Suspects in Niger Delta

In a major operation across the Niger Delta, Nigerian troops dismantled over 43 illegal oil bunkering sites, arrested 19 suspects, and seized more than 260,000 liters of stolen oil products. The 6 Division Army’s Acting Deputy Director, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, announced these accomplishments, highlighting efforts to curb economic sabotage in the region.

The operation included demolishing 11 vehicles, 21 boats, and 11 motorcycles involved in illegal refining activities. In Rivers State, the troops uncovered seven illegal refining sites in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area, where they confiscated over 60,000 litres of illegally refined diesel and destroyed several fiber boats, wooden boats, and other makeshift bunkering equipment.

In Buguma Creeks, authorities dismantled four active refining hubs, seizing eight large cooking pots, reservoirs, and local boats containing more than 12,500 litres of stolen products. Additional raids around Odagwa, Akwa, Oza West, and other areas resulted in intercepting of several wooden boats holding over 10,000 litres of stolen crude.

This coordinated effort signals a renewed crackdown on illegal oil refining and bunkering, as security forces continue their campaign to combat oil theft and protect Nigeria’s resources.
