EMR Calls for Strengthened Collaboration to Bolster Niger Delta Maritime Sector

The Energy and Maritime Reporters Corps (EMR) is urging a unified effort to advance the maritime sector in Rivers State, particularly in addressing issues of professionalism and standardization that affect the industry’s reputation internationally. The call was made during the 2024 Seminar and Awards in Port Harcourt, themed “Understanding the Maritime Subsector and Issues in the Coastal Areas.”

EMR Chairman, Mr. Martins Giadom, stressed the importance of collaboration among key stakeholders to build a robust maritime sector that supports economic development in the South-South zone. Giadom emphasized EMR’s dedication to fostering growth in the maritime, oil, and gas sectors, appealing for partnerships with entities like NIMENA, MACBAN, NIMASA, and the Shippers Council, among others.

The seminar also highlighted pressing safety issues, with Dr. Daniel Tamunodukobipi, National Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Marine Engineers and Naval Architects (NIMENA), raising concerns over inadequate boat certification standards that have contributed to rising accidents. Speaking on “Maritime Safety Concerns and Approaches,” Tamunodukobipi advocated for employing qualified maritime professionals to strengthen safety and capitalize on the blue economy. He pointed out gaps in the recently established Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, noting the absence of experienced marine engineers and relevant experts, which undermines efforts for industry reform.

This call to action underscores the need for a coordinated approach to professionalize the sector, improve safety standards, and position Nigeria’s maritime industry for sustainable growth.
