PDP Urges Rivers State People to Participate in Local Government Elections, Warns Police Against Derailing Democracy

By Tina Amanda

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the people of Rivers State to come out en masse for the Local Government Area (LGA) elections scheduled for Saturday, October 5, 2024.

In a press statement issued today, by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, urged the people to assert their constitutional right to participate in the democratic process.

The party emphasized that civil control of democratic activities in Rivers State belongs to the people and cannot be taken away by any person, group, or organization.

The PDP reaffirmed that both the people and the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) are fully prepared for the election, noting that the RSIEC has all the necessary materials to conduct the vote, in accordance with the Supreme Court’s ruling and the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended).

To clarify the legal stance, the PDP cited Section 84(15) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which states, “Nothing in this section shall empower the courts to stop the holding of primaries or general elections, under the Act pending the determination of a suit.”

The PDP strongly condemned what it described as attempts by the APC-controlled police to disrupt and frustrate the election, accusing them of working against the will of the people, the law, and democratic principles.

Reports of police operatives invading RSIEC facilities, allegedly to stop the election, were labeled as direct attacks on democracy and the rule of law. However, the PDP praised the people of Rivers State for resisting these efforts and standing firm in their resolve to vote.

The party further cautioned that any disruption of law and order in the state should be blamed on the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Inspector General of Police, urging Nigerians and the international community to hold these entities accountable if such an occurrence arises.

The PDP also reminded the Inspector General of Police of his constitutional duty to ensure a secure environment for the smooth conduct of the elections, regardless of personal or political affiliations. The party called on him to act professionally and in the interest of Nigeria’s democracy.

In conclusion, the PDP commended the people of Rivers State for their courage and determination to defend their democratic rights and expressed its full support for Governor Sim Fubara and the government in ensuring that the elections proceed peacefully.
