Tension as four babies die in Delta hospital

There is tension in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State as angry patients and visitors protest the alleged deaths of four newborn babies at the Central General Hospital in the area within 24 hours.

The protesters had blamed the incident partly on the lack of electricity supply, alleged negligence, and shortage of medical personnel in the hospital.

It was gathered that the protest on Friday, stalled activities in the hospital as gates leading to the government hospital remained shut.

However, the management of the hospital was said to have called in security operatives to restore normalcy.

It was further learnt that some of the bereaved families had insisted to resort to litigations against the government hospital over their losses and called for an investigation into the circumstances leading to the deaths of the infants.

The deceased babies were reported to have suffered neonatal deaths, minutes after delivery at the hospital between last Thursday and Friday.

But a nurse on duty who craved anonymity faulted the claims, saying the circumstances of deaths were different.

“Two died in their mothers’ wombs, while two infants died after delivery. It is not the doctor’s fault,” she said.

Meanwhile, the management of the hospital and the State Commissioner for Health are yet to comment on the matter.
