Three persons are feared dead after gunmen suspected to be cultists invaded Oshie community in Engeni, Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State.
It was learnt that the gunmen, numbering over five, stormed the area on Wednesday and shot sporadically causing panic in the community.
Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt, a youth leader in the area said the gunmen arrived in the community early hours of Wednesday, leaving the three people dead.
He urged the state Commissioner of Police, Friday Eboka, to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and prosecuted.
Although the acting spokesperson of the state police command, Grace Iringe-koko, said she was yet to get the report of the incident, an indigene of the area identified as Alex Alabrima has called on Governor Nyesom Wike to declare a state of emergency in the LGA.
In a statement on Thursday, Alabrima said people of the area could no longer sleep with their eyes closed as it had been under siege by cultists.
According to him, “the people of Ahoada West local government area in Rivers State can no longer sleep with their two eyes closed since the notorious cultist by name General Kumasi from Ekpeye was killed by the military men last year.
“Ahoada West has been under siege by these cult boys people are killed on a daily basis and the local government chairman seems to be helpless as communities in Ahoada West are invaded on a daily basis by these cult boys.
“Just yesterday Oshie community was invaded and almost 3 people were killed and up till now the local government chairman has not released any press statement, for how long are we going to be living like this.”
