Delta govt shuts down school after 1-year-old dies from flogging

The Delta State Government has shut down a school, Arise and Shine Nursery and Primary School in Asaba, the State capital following the death of a 1-year-old pupil, Obinna Udeze.

It was learnt that the 1-year-old victim died from injuries he sustained after his teacher, Emeka Nwogbo, allegedly flogged him, leaving marks on his body.

The little boy reportedly fell unwell and was admitted to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba where he died on Saturday, February 12.

In a viral video shared by the victim’s mother, the victim was seen on a hospital bed receiving treatment.

According to the distraught mum, “My son has not been himself since the incident, this is him on the hospital bed receiving drip after the incident in the school and up until now, the school has not called to know how he is faring or how it’s going.”

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Delta state police command, DSP Edafe Bright, said explained that operatives of the command has arrested the suspect following the death of the pupil.

“Yes, it’s true. The pupil died yesterday (Saturday) morning. We have arrested the teacher. He’s currently in our custody and the investigation into the matter continues. He would be charged to court as soon as possible,” Edafe said.

Also reacting to the incident, the state Commissioner for Basic Education, Chika Ossai, said the investigation showed the school was not approved by the state government.
