A 38-year old has reportedly impregnated his 14-year old daughter in Bayelsa State after allegedly molesting her since she was seven years old.
The suspect, who hails from Ogani Wily Kaira, Ogoni, Rivers State, was arrested by Ekeki Police Division following a formal complaint from the Gender Response Initiative Team (GRIT).
Dise Ogbise, coordinator, Gender Response Initiative Team (GRIT), told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yenagoa on Friday that the suspect was taken into police custody immediately after some members of the public reported that the girl was five months pregnant for him.
She stated that the girl needed a lot of support to enable her to go through the rigours of pregnancy at a very tender age.
Ogbise also said that the Bayelsa State Government has promised to provide the pregnant teen mum psychological and sundry support she needs.
“The government will ensure she continues her education. The victim, a Junior Secondary School student who aspires to be a musician, will be assisted to achieve her life goal.”
The coordinator noted that the man had been violating his daughter, and things got worse when the victim’s mother died a few years ago.
She further applauded the neighbour who gave GRIT a tip about the incident while calling on residents to be vigilant and alert the team, and other gender advocacy groups in the state, of any case of girl child violation or molestation.
Meanwhile, the State police spokesperson, Asinim Butswat, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.
