The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Rivers State chapter, has paid a charitable visit to the Port Harcourt Children’s Home, at 3 Nembe Street, Borokiri, in a bid to support the needy in the society.
The visit which was led by the chairperson of the association, Susan Serekara-Nwikhana and secretary, Ngozi Anosike, is part of her action plans for the year 2022.
The Association expressed concern towards the children, even as they appealed to the government, corporate organisations, religious bodies and well meaning Nigerians to support the Children in every way possible.
NAWOJ while presenting gift items to the officials of the Children’s home also commended them for their effort in feeding and taking care of the children.
In an interview with newsmen shortly after the presentation, the NAWOJ chairperson stressed that the essence of the visit was to show love, kindness and encouragement to the children.
“we came to identify with the children, being that this is the beginning of the year and we felt that if we identify with the children and put smiles on their faces, they will be happy, and we believe that by so doing, we too will be happy and our ways will be opened up for us.
“When you look at the little prayers these children offer, it goes a long way and we support and believe that, so, we felt we have to start with them this year.
“All through last year, we have been going to other places but we have not been able to identify with them and they are part of our action plan for the year. Since last year we couldn’t make it, that’s why we said we must start this year with the children and that is why we are here today.”
“What I mean by action plan is that we have outlined programmes, things we do each year and our visit here is part of our plan this year. Action plan is the program of activities for the year”
“We are working with the ministry of social welfare, the commissioner in charge of the ministry is working with us. We have met with her seeking for the partnership of the ministry and they have already obliged us that. That is why we feel our coming here is not out of place. We started the work with her last year but this year we felt we identify first with the children.”
She further called on groups, associations, agencies and individuals to continue to show love and care to the children as it will give them sense of belonging in the society.
“My advice to other association is that, these children need their attention and because they need their attention, I would want them to also visit this home from time to time, just to put some smiles on their faces because when we came in they were very happy.
“Although due to the COVID-19 we could not snap with them, we could not identify with them ordinarily, if not we would go inside, play with them, carry them but they said, due to COVID-19 we can’t go in, we just officially handed over to the officer in charge.”
Some of the items presented to the children’s home by the organization includes, Cartons of Indomie, Pampers, rolls of tissue paper amongst others.
On her part, a Representative of the Port Harcourt Children’s Home, who gave her name as Esther Ogbe, appreciated the leadership and members of NAWOJ for the kind gesture, praying that God will continue to bless and uphold them.
